The following are yearly awards presented by CGS.

Geoscience Teacher

K-12 Earth Science Teacher of the Year Award

CGS is a chapter of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the world's largest Geological Association. CGS has about 300 professional geologist members within the greater Ventura/Santa Barbara area representing the Pacific Section AAPG.

The members of the CGS believe in the importance of a good earth science education. In order to meet the needs of our society and the demands of our environment, we think everyone should have an understanding of how earth systems interact.

To encourage earth science education, CGS established its first annual K-12 Earth Science Teacher of the Year Award in 1999.

This award is intended to recognize and encourage excellence in teaching earth science at the K-12 level. It consists of a $500 cash gift (for the teacher's discretionary use), and is given to the outstanding K-12 earth science teacher in the Santa Barbara-Ventura County areas.

An annual monetary award is presented to the Kindergarten through 12th Grade Teacher who best employs and furthers the knowledge of the earth sciences to students, or who has designed a curriculum that emphasizes the teaching of geology or related natural science subjects.

Teachers in the Elementary, Middle School (Junior High), or High School level may nominate themselves or be recommended by a colleague.

John J. Woolley Teacher Award

This award was established to recognize educators and to support their geology programs at the undergraduate level. Inspired by John’s contributions as a geology instructor at Oxnard Community College and Field Trip Leader to his family’s beloved Santa Rosa Island, this award is given to assist teachers in bringing geology and earth science to another generation of students.

A monetary award will periodically be granted to geology instructors in support of their teaching efforts. This award can be applied to school field trips, education materials, and other resources. The spirit of this award is to further an interest in geology through an inspired and enthusiastic teacher.

Student Scholarships

Given annually by the Coast Geological Society

Monetary awards or scholarships are given to qualified students in a 4-year and 2-year college geology curriculum who have shown a dedication to geology, who maintain high grade-point averages in their general and geology-related major studies, and who demonstrate a commitment to lifelong interest in the earth sciences.

To qualify for a CGS scholarship or award, the student must meet the following criteria:

  • Obtain a written recommendation from the college advisor or instructor of their choice (must be written on college stationary and submitted along with the CGS questionnaire form);

  • Completely fill out the CGS scholarship application questionnaire form; and

  • Submit the required documentation by the annual due date of April 15th.

The elected officers of the CGS will select the most qualified candidates, and hope to see the following:

  • An overall grade-point average of at least 3.00 for all college level classes taken;

  • A grade-point average in an earth science major of at least 3.50;

  • An enthusiastic or special recommendation from the college advisor, department chair, or mentor professor; and

  • A background summary of the students interests, experience, educational accomplishments, and goals.

John J. Woolley Student Scholarship Fund

This fund supports geology and earth science students in the Santa Barbara, Ventura, and western Los Angeles County areas, and is the only fund sponsored entirely by the Coast Geological Society. Scholarships, awards, and educational materials are given to Junior High School through college graduate level students annually to further their education and interest in the earth sciences.
