2011 GEOTREK IV FINAL REORT

The 2011 GeoTrek was a big success.  Thirty-two CGS members contributed $2,700 to the CGS Geology Student Scholarship Fund.  This amount is $800 more than was contributed on any of the other three GeoTreks.  Thanks to all of you who donated for your support of this worthy endeavor.  Because I only do a GeoTrek every other year, about half of the proceeds from this year, $1,350, will be given out as scholarships at the May, 2012 CGS meeting and the other half at the May, 2013 meeting.  By this time GeoTrek V will be underway.

Also, participation in this year’s event was up because of running most of the hikes on Saturdays.  Sixty-three hikers took part in at least one or more of the hikes, and 22 of those were CGS members.  The others were CSUN alumni, faculty, staff, and other friends of geology.  Congratulations and thanks to all those who participated with me.  I enjoyed your company and conversation on the trail, and I hope you learned something geological along the way.  Special thanks goes to Mike Barth, Susie Bartz, Jeff Kennedy, and Bud White, who served a shuttlers for the participants on the hike from Sespe Creek to Ojai.

For those CGS members who intended to support GeoTrek IV and the CGS Geology Student Scholarship Fund, but who for one reason or another lost track of their intentions somewhere along the way, there is still time to become part of this year’s success story.  Just make out a check to Coast Geological Society and write GeoTrek on the memo line.  Any amount, small or large, will be appreciated.  Send the check to me at:

I will record your contribution, write a thank-you letter for your tax records, and send the check to the CGS Treasurer for deposit.

GeoTrek IV was a great series of hikes and I look forward to GeoTrek V in 2013.  I’m already making plans and I have a real easy one figured out that will essentially walk along the beach to see seacliff geology for a presently unspecified number of miles.  This will be one for the kids to join in.  See you all next Fall at the September CGS meeting.
