Talk Abstract:

Bringing New Value to Old Data: A Cooperative Agreement between the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and California State University Northridge's Center for Geographic Studies

The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) partnered with California State University, Northridge’s Center for Geographical Studies (CGS) to improve the utility of the bureau’s Geological and Geophysical (G&G) information collection. This collection is extremely varied and has a wide variety of document formats, from paper-based geologic structure maps to digital 3D velocity models.

Under the guidance of and in collaboration with BOEM staff, CGS: 1) developed an intuitive and effective database framework, 2) converted disparate components into a standardized digital geospatial database, and 3) explored how this system could support other applications such as machine learning. This unique collaborative opportunity allowed CGS to train its students on a dataset that presents real world data management challenges while also providing BOEM with an enhanced ability to manage development of U.S. Outer Continental Shelf energy and mineral resources in an environmentally and economically responsible way.
